This was a big year for us because we started the Shame Shelf book club in February 2023! There were some highs, and some definite lows in our choices, so here is our roundup of the very best and the very worst.
2023: The Year in Books
February March April May
June July August September
October November December
Our Top Picks

Kay says:
'This was my pick as we read Nettle and Bone earlier in the year and I loved T. Kingfisher's style. I'm a real lover of all things fantasy, and T. Kingfisher is such a creative and unique fantasy writer and knows exactly how to pace a story and grab a reader.
I had high expectations, and this book exceeded them. I loved that the style is fantasy for adults, with more mature main characters, a strong female lead, a handsome and intriguing love interest, and a murder plot that kept us guessing.'

CY says:
'This was my choice for October because I kept seeing everyone on social media talk about this book. In particular, I was inspired to read it after seeing my favourite Youtuber post a review about it. And the hype did not disappoint.
Taylor Jenkins Reid writes in a style that is easy to read and gripping, pacing the story well and drawing the readers in. The book dives into the world of celebrities and glamour, and shows you the sacrifices that had to be made to get to the top.'
The Worst Book Ever

Kay and CY say:
'This was Kay's choice and possibly the most boring book either of us has ever read. This was the unanimous worst book of the year. Had CY not already bought and read it so quickly, Kay would have definitely changed to a different book after reading only a few pages.
We did appreciate the insight into the life of a family dealing with grief and mental illness, but both felt the execution left a lot to be desired. The plot was lacking, the narrator was insufferable for the most part, and whilst it seemed we should be feeling sympathy for the characters what we mostly felt was annoyance.'
